I’m delighted to be able to introduce this H&E page on our website. Not only has this magazine been in existence for nearly 120 years, it remains the only monthly naturist magazine in the world – and I feel privileged to have taken the cover photograph of the 100th anniversary issue in June 1999 (when, at that time, it was assumed that the magazine was launched in 1900; the current editor’s recent research traces its origins to 1902). Not only that, but Leslie Bainbridge was the editor when my first photo was published in its pages in 1967, and I have worked with eight successive editors since then – Murray Wren, Susan Mayfield, Kate Sturdy, Jane Hendy-Smith, Helen Ludbrook, Mark Nisbet, Sara Backhouse and, since 2008, Sam Hawcroft. Sam has become a good friend who is now not only the editor but also the owner and publisher – I can only wish her all warmest best wishes for the future.
H&E is the oldest naturist magazine in the world, and is the leading monthly title aimed at naturists and all those who enjoy any aspects of their lifestyle without the restrictions of clothing. H&E originally stood for “health and efficiency”, the theory being that continued exposure to the sun and air, in combination with a good diet and regular exercise, was beneficial to health and made the body work more efficiently. Nowadays, naturism is more of a lifestyle choice with much less importance placed on the perfect body image – and more emphasis on travel, sunbathing, naked activities and, most of all, fun.
